Mid-year Reports

Understanding Your Child’s Mid-Year Progress

The new reports use New Zealand’s common progress descriptors to show how your child is achieving against the expectations for their year level.

Progress Levels at a Glance

Emerging: Beginning to grasp some new ideas and making progress with a lot of support.

Developing: Starting to understand key ideas and applying them with some help.

Consolidating: Becoming more independent, remembering what they’ve learned, and starting to use it in new ways.

Proficient: Confidently learning on their own, explaining their thinking, and applying skills without help.

Exceeding: Showing advanced, creative thinking and easily connecting complex ideas across different areas.

Important Context

A note on Mid-Point Progress: Because this report comes halfway through the school year, your child has not yet been exposed to the full year’s curriculum. Their current placement reflects where they are right now on that journey.

New Curriculum Outcomes: These judgements are based on New Zealand’s refreshed curriculum. Schools are currently navigating these updated outcomes, so these benchmarks may look and feel a bit different from past student expectations.

Please rest assured that our dedicated teachers are working exceptionally hard to implement these changes. Please expect your child’s report to be sent before the end of Term 2.

Matariki 2026 – Term 3

After the school holiday break, we will be celebrating Matariki during the first week back. We have an open whānau afternoon planned for Wednesday 22 July. Children will be engaging in Matariki activities from 2.00pm to 2.45pm. You are welcome to come and join your child’s class.  We will then have Kapa Haka perform outside from 2.45pm for families. On Friday, we will conclude Matariki week with a whole school assembly at 9.15am.

Staffing News

Goodbye and Welcome!
We are sad to say goodbye to our fabulous Learning Support Assistant, Elaine, at the end of this term. Elaine has been an integral part of our team for the last 14 months. With her calm, kind hearted and knowledgeable approach, she has worked closely with learners across the school. Elaine is returning to Ireland with her family. We wish them safe travels and all the very best for the future.

Meanwhile, we are lucky to welcome Maria, who has recently joined our Learning Support Team. Maria has experience working at another local primary school and brings a diverse skill set to the role. Our learners are enjoying getting to know Maria and are already making her feel very welcome.

Student Celebrations

Our classes had so much fun taking part in the Library Shelfie Challenge!

We created a “shelfie” by drawing ourselves with our favourite book and shared why others should read it. You should read them too!

In the ESOL program we have many wonderful English language learners from all around the globe, who work really hard every day to improve their English.

This week, we celebrate one of these students, Karen in Year 6. She came to our school just a year and a half ago with no English at all and now she is reading, writing and speaking so well.

Have a look at the progress she has made in her writing from then to now and please enjoy reading her ‘Letter from Earth’ that she has written as part of the ESOL Inquiry of Sustainability this term.

Parent to Year 4 & 6 students

Parent to Year 3 student

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the staff for the time, effort and dedication that went into putting together such an awesome performance. We really enjoyed it, and it was so much fun to watch every item. SCHOOL DONATIONS

 An investment in our students

Our mission at Takapuna Primary School is to deliver a great quality learning environment that supports a quality education. To support this, we are seeking your help.

Your school donations make a very real difference to us as a state-funded public school. Our basic costs are met by the Ministry of Education, but it’s the money we receive from our school community that really allows us to provide opportunities, equipment and teaching beyond what is funded by the government.

The school donation for 2026 is $260 per student, or $420 for families with two or more students.

We can arrange weekly, fortnightly, or monthly instalments via internet banking if this helps spread the cost. Importantly, donations are tax deductible so approximately one third of every donation can be claimed back as a tax credit. That means for a $260 donation you receive $86 back in your wallet. Your actual donation cost is just $174.

To make your donation payments please go to the ‘Hero’ app and click on ‘Student Billing’. Alternatively, any payments can also be made directly into the school bank account 12 3026 0792484 00 – if doing so, please ensure you include your child’s name and ‘donation’ as reference on the payment.

Any queries regarding payments can be directed to our accounts team: accounts@tps.school.nz

If you would like to know more about how the School Board operates, and/or would be interested in understanding how else you can help, please contact: takapunaboard@tps.school.nz

IMPORTANT

If your child is LATE (after 8:58am), please make sure they sign in at the office upon arriving at school.

If they are RETURNING to school after an appointment offsite, they MUST sign in at the office BEFORE going to their classroom.

LOST PROPERTY

We have a lot of lost property in the lost property box.

Please take the time to check before the end of day tomorrow. All remaining items will be disposed.

REMEMBER……..

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE ALWAYS HAVE CURRENT PARENT CONTACT DETAILS ON FILE.

IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT THAT WE ARE UPDATED IF YOUR CHILD HAS ANY NEW MEDICAL INFORMATION WE NEED TO BE AWARE OF.

If you are moving house over the holidays, changed your mobile phone number or if your child has any NEW medical information we should be aware of, please email office@tps.school.nz
