At Takapuna Primary School, we believe that creativity is a vital component of a well-rounded education. The Arts provide a unique vehicle for self-expression, confidence, and critical thinking. We are incredibly proud to offer a dedicated, school-wide Arts programme led by our Specialist Arts Teacher, ensuring that every child at our school experiences the transformative power of creative exploration.
An Immersive, Full-Day Arts Experience
To allow for true depth and engagement, our students experience the Arts through an immersive, full-day programme. Rather than short, rushed lessons, classes spend an entire day at a time with our Specialist Arts Teacher. This dedicated block of time gives our tamariki the space to deeply focus, experiment, and lose themselves in the creative process without interruption.
A Rich, Integrated Curriculum
Our dynamic programme seamlessly weaves together all four strands of the Arts curriculum:
- Visual Arts: Exploring textures, colours, and mediums through sketching, painting, and sculpting.
- Music: Developing rhythm, learning instruments, and exploring the joy of song and sound.
- Drama: Building confidence, empathy, and communication skills through roleplay and storytelling.
- Dance: Expressing ideas and energy through movement, coordination, and choreography.
Valuing Hands-On Creativity
We believe that children learn best by doing. These specialist days are packed with hands-on, practical learning where mistakes are viewed as discoveries and unique ideas are celebrated. By prioritising the Arts, we value the essential role that creativity plays in a child’s development—helping them become innovative problem-solvers, resilient learners, and expressive communicators.
Our Signature Creative Celebrations
To truly honor the hard work of our students and teachers, Takapuna Primary School runs an exciting, alternating cycle of major creative events that bring our wider community together:
- The Whole-School Production (Every 3 Years): A hallmark of our school experience is our spectacular production held at the prestigious Bruce Mason Centre. Every single child has the opportunity to step out under the bright lights and perform on a real, professional theatre stage. Our students and teachers work incredibly hard to create an exceptional show, building magical, lifelong memories.
- The Triennial Art Exhibition (Every 3 Years): In our dedicated Visual Arts year, we transform our school into a vibrant, professional gallery. We host a special evening event to showcase the incredible masterpieces created by every student. We warmly invite our local community—including neighboring schools, local ECEs (Early Childhood Centres), and residents from nearby aged care facilities—to come together and enjoy the magnificent creativity on display.
