Mathematics

At Takapuna Primary School, we believe that every child can become a confident, capable, and enthusiastic mathematician. Aligning closely with the new national curriculum, our mathematics programme focuses on building deep conceptual understanding, mathematical fluency, and real-world problem-solving skills. We aim to foster a positive “can-do” attitude toward maths, ensuring all students are challenged and supported to reach their full potential.

A Consistent, School-Wide Approach

Consistency builds confidence. Our entire teaching staff utilizes a unified, evidence-based framework for teaching mathematics across all year levels. This ensures that as students move from one year to the next, the mathematical language, strategies, and tools they use remain consistent. We focus heavily on core strands—Number and Algebra, Measurement and Space, and Statistics—ensuring a robust mathematical foundation for every child.

Specialist Intervention & Learning Support

We recognize that children progress on different mathematical journeys. To support this, our Board-funded Specialist Learning Support Teacher provides targeted, small-group intervention for students who need a little bit extra to grasp key concepts. By working closely alongside classroom teachers, this specialist support helps close gaps early, unpack complex tasks, and build foundational math confidence.

Excellent Professional Development: The Learner First

To ensure our teaching practice remains at the cutting edge, Takapuna Primary School is invested in a comprehensive, multi-year professional development programme. Our teachers engage in deep “team days” and workshops with specialist facilitators from The Learner First.

We are privileged to work alongside leading mathematics expert Marie Hirst, focusing on “Rapid and Rich Routines” and open-ended problem-solving. This high-level training equips our staff to design rich tasks that challenge students to apply their mathematical knowledge in creative, critical, and collaborative ways.

Achieving Highly in Mathematics

Our ultimate goal is for Takapuna Primary students to achieve highly in mathematics. We don’t just teach children how to find an answer; we teach them to understand the why behind the math. By encouraging critical thinking and mathematical reasoning, we prepare our students to navigate a data-rich world with confidence and skill.
