Funding Outcomes

The Takapuna Primary School Board has identified several areas that require specific investment to deliver the best possible outcomes to our tamariki (children), school and/or community.

Presently these items do not have either Government (Ministry of Education ‘MoE’) funding and/or Board funding available to support delivery. Specifically, while the MoE does provide funding to support school property maintenance, this does not always cover full school costs. In some instances, property is Board (not MoE) owned, such as the Pool, the entire Pupuke block and the facilities end of the school hall. As a result, until funding can be sourced / allocated, the below items will remain open for prioritisation against funding.

Our intent is to provide visibility of school identified areas for investment so that:

  • Our school community is aware of where the Board believes further investment is required (over and above standard school operations).
  • Provide ‘funding with purpose’ insight to where we need / want to spend additional resources.
  • Provide an opportunity for our wider school or local community to contribute to and/or complete sponsor a specific item.
  • Support transparency and awareness. If there are any alternative suggestions, please do email: takapunaboard@tps.school.nz

The Board would welcome any discussion on any potential assistance to support the delivery of the below items. Whether that being financial support, project management, seeking grants and/or donations of time and/or equipment.

The following are items that are strategically relevant and/or provide school, learner, community enhancement.

Item Name:

Description:

Benefits:

Strategic Pool Enhancement

What: Design & build covered / enclosed roof for pool.

Background: The school pool provides enhanced education by readying children for water safety skills. Due to the uncovered design this does limit functional school use to the first and last term of the year. On a first and last term schedule it puts the pool at its operational limit and requires compressed lessons.

Benefit / Outcome: An enclosed roof and walls would enable year round school use, but also community use that could also supplement pool running and ongoing maintenance costs.

Costs: TBC

Next step: Concept design required (budgeted) + Community engagement before further investment.

  • Additional student water safety lessons.
  • Community use.
  • Better water quality.
  • Better school financial outcomes.

School playground upgrades

What: Multi-stage playground replacement and enhancement.

  • Phase 1: Complete – Complete replacement of old (small) playground.
  • Phase 2: Board Funded in 2025 – Opening of Native Grove / nature play space into functional area.
  • Phase 3: Partially Board Funded in 2025 – Design and build enhanced shade systems that can provide better sun management and/or completely covered courts to enable wet weather use.
  • Phase TBC: Unfunded –  Concrete / surface the space between playgrounds.
  • Phase TBC: UnfundedUpgrade of space where prefabs are presently located.
  • Phase TBC: UnfundedDesign and build extension to phase 1 to have a larger more integrated playground for all ages.
    • Notes: From phase 1 the core plastic components have been retained, including tunnel & slides (x2).

Background: The school playgrounds have already decreased in size due to equipment fatigue and the existing structures require replacement. Playgrounds are an essential space to encourage play, strength, balance and interaction.

Costs: TBC – Expected $100k – $150k per phase.

Next step: Concept design required + Community engagement.

  • More play space for children across busy playgrounds.
  • Out of hours community use.
  • Encourages active play.
  • Supports student development, strength and confidence.

Re-tarmac existing courts +/- repair tree root damage.

What: Re-tarmac the existing courts.

Background: The school has good tarmac space, but tree roots and repairs are starting to create indented surfaces.

Costs: Full quotes required for main court repairs or alternatives. Tree root damage has been quoted as c~$40k, however this does Not include the wider court area and is limited to space below the main field.

Next step: Prioritisation against annual school investment.

  • Better playing surface for learners.
  • H&S Risk Management.
  • Out of hours community use.

Rangitoto Building – Garden surface

What: Replace the garden surface at the back of the Rangitoto building. This has a large rock base which makes it both difficult to walk on and also an active risk where children throw rocks at neighbouring properties.

Background: Initially designed and used as a school garden (garden to table) programme however has not been used due to design and also prioritisation of teaching into other focus areas.

Benefit / Outcome: Resurfaced space would enable area to be utilised again.

Cost: TBC – Potentially minimal with working-bee to dig out existing planter boxes and stones and replace with topsoil for grass.

Next steps: Consider options and seek community support.

  • Additional student space.
  • Removes active risk area from school.

Upgrade drinking fountains

What: School drinking fountains are at end of useful life and are being repaired / replaced on demand.

Background: The existing school drinking fountains are aging and are not visually appealing and/or easy to use.

Benefit / Outcome: Provide high quality water that supports both drinking and bottle stations. Minimise water wastage from leaks.

Costs: Est $20k (installed).

Next steps: TPS SCG are working on a grant application to enhance school drinking fountains. Update expected by end of 2025.

  • Student benefit.
  • Out of hours community use.

Enhanced School Shade

What: Design and build additional shaded space, either as direct standalone space (like beside hall) or cover playground spaces.

Background: During hot days shaded space is limited.

Benefit / Outcome: Students would benefit from space that enables them to be outside and protected (instead of being inside as the alternative).

Cost: TBC subject to size and design.

Next steps: Consider options and prioritisation.

  • Student safety and wellbeing.
