Principal’s Message

We hope you have had a wonderful holiday break. It was great to see so many families bringing their children along to meet their 2026 classroom teachers on Tuesday.

Fresh paint and fresh energy for 2026:

Our outdoor facilities have been getting a major glow-up in 2025 so we can start the year off with a bang. We are incredibly proud of how our school grounds are looking. If you’ve walked through the gates lately, you’ll have noticed our vibrant, newly painted court lines and the crisp new Four Square grids.

Welcome to new staff:

A warm welcome back to Claire Sew Hoy, who has returned from maternity leave as our specialist Arts teacher (Visual Art, Dance, Drama & Music). Claire will be working with us 3 days a week (Tuesday to Thursday).

As a SunSmart School, we require all students to follow our sun safety policy during Terms 1 and 4. Please help us keep your tamariki safe by checking the following:

Students must wear a wide-brimmed or bucket hat (that protects the face, neck, and ears) during morning tea and lunch. Students without a hat will be asked to play in the designated shaded areas.

Sunscreen: We encourage students to apply sunscreen before arriving at school. We have sunscreen stations available in every classroom for “top-ups” throughout the day.

Water Bottles: Playing hard in the sun is thirsty work! Please send your child with a named, reusable water bottle every day.

Understanding the Stepped Attendance Plan:

The new national framework is designed to catch attendance dips early so we can support families before this becomes a larger issue. The Government’s target is for 80% of students to attend regularly, that is to attend school more than 90% of the time.

Good: Less than 5 days’ absence in a term.

Worrying: Less than 10 days absence in a term.

Concerning: Up to 15 days absence in a term.

Very concerning: 15 + days or more.

The impact of lateness

Being “just five minutes late” might seem minor, but it can be quite disruptive. When a student arrives late:

  1. They miss the morning kōrero and essential instructions for the day.
  2. It can cause “entry anxiety” as they walk into a lesson already in progress.
  3. It interrupts the flow of learning for the rest of the class.

How you can help

  • Notify us early: If your child is going to be absent, please let the office know by 8:45 AM via [School App/Phone/Email].
  • Schedule appointments wisely: Where possible, please try to book medical or dental appointments outside of school hours.
  • Communicate: If there are challenges at home making it hard to get to school on time, please talk to us. We are here to support you, not judge.

Water Skills for Life

This is not an option. Like all curriculum areas, teachers will be teaching and assessing their progress. If there is a medical reason preventing them from participating, we ask for a written note from your child’s GP, in which case we will make alternative arrangements.

SCHOOL DONATIONS – an investment in our students

Our mission at Takapuna Primary School is to deliver a great quality learning environment that supports a quality education. To support this, we are seeking your help.

Your school donations make a very real difference to us as a state-funded public school. Our basic costs are met by the Ministry of Education, but it’s the money we receive from our school community that really allows us to provide opportunities, equipment and teaching beyond what is funded by the government. As an example, we would like to undertake further enhancements including sun shades, and also to enable wet weather use. This funding is therefore so important in providing a high-quality learning environment (both in and out of the classroom).

The school donation for 2026 is $260 per student, or $420 for families with two or more students. We can arrange weekly, fortnightly, or monthly instalments via internet banking if this helps spread the cost. Importantly, donations are tax deductible so approximately one third of every donation can be claimed back as a tax credit. That means for a $260 donation you receive $86 back in your wallet. Your actual donation cost is just $174.

To make your donation payments please go to the ‘Hero’ app and click on the ‘Finance’ tab. Alternatively, any payments can also be made directly into the school bank account 12 3026 0792484 00 – if doing so, please ensure you include your child’s name and ‘donation’ as reference on the payment.

We do understand these are uncertain times and managing financial priorities can be difficult for some families.

Any queries regarding payments can be directed to our accounts team: accounts@tps.school.nz

If you would like to know more about how the School Board operates, and/or would be interested in understanding how else you can help, please contact: takapunaboard@tps.school.nz

Here is a photo of the Principal and Staff in 1923.

This is the first photograph taken of our school when is was just one building and had a different name, Lake school.

The photo was taken around 1860-1870.

A reminder that small beginings can go a long way.

TPS are collecting these stickers from Yummy apples. Your whānau’s job is to start filling up your sheet. This week a sheet that looks like this will                                                                           come home or you can print off sheets here. When your sheet is full of Yummy                           stickers, return it to the school office and they will give you another sheet. If you buy bags of apples, there is a  special sheet for you. Email sports@tps.school.nz  and we will get you the correct sticker sheet. By collecting these Yummy stickers, we are able to get sports equipment for our Tāmariki to use during morning tea and lunchtimes.

In 2025 we were able to gain $737.00 in sports equipment for our tāmariki. We ordered: a new pickleball set with nets, a gutter board, netballs, basketballs and bean bags. We are so appreciative to have this new equipment.  For more information see here
